The floods return
to the paths they carved
over centuries
passing through
the same rocky breach
a remembered route
to the least resistance
though simple things
may shift the path
the earth remembers
the rocks smooth their edges
as the flood waters rush
again and again
a cycle unbroken
until the rocks tumble into dust
until the beaten path
becomes a dam
and the floods must forge
a new direction – Caroline A. Slee
