Carry Me
When my legs can’t hold my stance
and my feet have lost the ground
carry me to the river
let me return
a creature of water
set roaming for years
finding evolution in reverse
as I slide down muddy banks
When this body can no longer stand
against the weight of gravity
and purpose
carry me to the water’s edge
let me return
first afloat and then diving
joyfully through the depths
a homecoming delayed
finally fulfilled – Caroline A. Slee
