turn our faces from ill wishes
and still they persist
the whispers behind hands
the snakes in the gardens
we shore up our defenses
with talismans and charms
carefully planted thyme
horseshoes at the door
the eyes to keep away the evil gaze
we are modern and removed
from superstitions shared
