My children do not attend a parochial school. As a result, my daughter is studying world religions as a part of her history class this year. Tonight, Maddie was explaining to me that there’s always one tenet of each faith that she forgets.
Alright, I told her. So, what are the Five Pillars of Islam. “Faith, Pilgrimage, Fasting, Alms-Giving, and something else.” Well, ladies and gentlemen, that other pillar is “Prayer.” The same held true for the Ten Commandments. After all of this studying, each of the students were split into groups to create their own religions. They had to develop tenets/commandments/pillars. Here’s Maddie, rattling off the tenets of the religion she and a few classmates created: “Faith, Respect, Integrity, Thriftiness, Kindess, um, um, ummmmm…” Yep, that’s my girl. She forgot her own tenets. Yikes. 🙂
Instead, we played a rousing game of “Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spok” in the grocery store. What can I say? When all else fails, head for laughter.
“Laugh at yourself, but don’t ever aim your doubt at yourself. Be bold. When you embark for strange places, don’t leave any of yourself safely on the shore. Have the nerve to go into unexplored territory.” ~ Alan Alda
A sweet Tuesday night, and blessings to you all…
